Data Collection and Analysis

Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count (AtD)

Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count (AtD) is a multi-year project funded by the Lumina Foundation for Education and operated by seven national partner organizations. Its primary aim is to support the development and implementation of effective institutional practices, strategies, and programs that will lead to higher levels of student achievement and success at community colleges. Achieving the Dream constitutes one of the foundation’s keystone efforts and is the largest non-government initiative in community college history.

JBL Associates collects and manages the relevant student-unit record data from each institution participating in the initiative, and is also tasked with data analysis and reporting. We have been responsible since the inception of the project for developing an extensive data collection and management system on over ninety colleges, seven cohorts, and seven academic years.

JBL Associates continues to produce numerous data reports and guides for the community college participating in the initiatives. Examples of our work include:

  • The Field Guide for Improving Student Success codifies the project's institutional improvement framework for increasing student success. It is a valuable tool both for new colleges and for continuing AtD colleges, as it captures the essence of the AtD process.
  • Principles and Practices of Student Success is a series of guides written by Achieving the Dream experts to assist community colleges in the areas of community engagement, evaluating interventions, diagnosis, cohort analysis, faculty engagement and use of IR/IT. The guides are tools that help project participants understand the depth and thought behind the AtD work.
  • Data Notes is a bi-monthly newsletter for participating colleges which reviews and examines initiative-wide data on a specific project-related subject. The newsletter is published on the AtD website for public viewing.
