Data Collection and Analysis

IPEDS Human Resources Data Quality Study,
National Center for Education Statistics

JBL Associates conducted a study to assess the reliability and quality of human resources (HR) data collected from postsecondary institutions through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). The 2004-05 IPEDS HR data collected in the Salaries (SA) and Employees by Assigned Position (EAP) components were compared to HR data from several external sources.

After taking definitional differences, data elements, and comparable institutions into consideration, HR data from the IPEDS SA component and HR data from the external sources were fairly consistent with one another. On the other hand, the HR data from the IPEDS EAP component that were compared to the HR data from the external sources revealed very small to large differences, depending on the data element evaluated.

After all data comparisons were completed, JBL Associates prepared a written summary of the results, which is available on the U.S. Department of Education’s website. For more information on this project, please contact Sue Clery at 301-654-5154.
